Value Chain Strengthening and Local Economic Development

The Challenge

From 2019 to 2020, Prospero contracted Agova to support and manage two key economic development initiatives in Zambia where opportunities for MSME growth had been identified. 1. Supporting a portfolio of SMEs in agricultural value chains across a range of provinces, and 2. Focusiing on identifying local economic opportunities for resettled and economically-affected communities in the Munali and Kalumbila mining areas.

The Solution

The intervention was aimed at improving the participation of local communities’  participation in the horticultural scheme that FQM’s Trident Foundation had helped to start up.This was done by addressing the infrastructure and technical capacity gaps that existed in the value chain.

Results

Agricultural value chains project: 5 of the portfolio SMEs reached their milestones, under the oversight and guidance of the consultant. This project reached a further 2,000 micro-businesses with income opportunities and job creation by Feb 2020 and 450 micro-businesses were reached with improved agricultural services.
