Project: Lusaka Urban Biogas Initiative Feasibility Study

Client: People in Need

Date: October 2022 – November 2022

The Problem

In late 2022, People in Need (PIN) identified several key challenges in urban spaces in Lusaka: poor organic waste management, lack of access to clean and renewable energy, and heavy reliance on chemical fertilizers. These issues were exacerbated by population growth and urbanization, creating a pressing need for sustainable solutions.

The Solution

Agova conducted a market research and feasibility study for the Lusaka Urban Biogas Initiative (LUBASI) to set up a biogas plant at Soweto Market. The plant would convert organic waste into cooking gas for vendors and produce organic fertilizer for farmers. Agova gathered data through interviews with 40 MSMEs at the market, which helped develop a business plan and a 3-year financial model to assess the project’s market potential and economic feasibility.

Results

The research and business plan provided valuable insights into the viability of establishing a biogas plant at Soweto Market. The feasibility study demonstrated the potential for biogas to address waste management issues, provide clean cooking solutions, and reduce deforestation in Lusaka. The long-term vision for the project is to expand biogas supply to urban areas across Zambia, offering a sustainable alternative for cooking and waste management.
