Project: Gender & Youth Assessment in Northern Mozambique
Client: TechnoServe, USAID Feed the Future PREMIER Activity
Date: July 2023 – October 2023
The Problem
Women and youth in Mozambique face significant challenges that limit their participation in agricultural value chains. These include limited access to resources, knowledge, and opportunities for meaningful engagement in agricultural markets. Addressing these barriers was crucial to improving livelihoods, promoting gender equality, and enhancing youth participation in agriculture.
The Solution
Solution
As part of the USAID-funded Feed the Future Mozambique project, TechnoServe Mozambique engaged Agova to conduct a Gender and Youth Assessment in the Nacala Corridor across Nampula, Zambezia, and Niassa provinces. Agova utilized a mixed-methods approach, including desk research, interviews, and focus group discussions with:
- 353 smallholder farmers (49% women, 48% youth)
- 12 commercial farmers (58% women, 8% youth)
- 29 MSMEs (28% women, 21% youth)
- Additional stakeholders, including financial institutions, government entities, companies, and NGOs
Results
The assessment revealed pathways to increase the participation of women and youth in agricultural value chains, diversify incomes, enhance food access, and build resilience. These findings are driving efforts to:
- Create opportunities for women and youth in agriculture
- Foster private sector and government engagement to support gender and youth targets
- Promote gender equality and inclusive growth in agricultural markets
