The Problem
Zambia’s transition from a linear to a circular economy faces challenges, including a lack of insights into market needs, untapped business opportunities for SMEs, and limited inclusion of women and youth in circular economy initiatives.
The Solution
Agova partnered with Tandem Circular Consulting on Zambia’s first Circular Economy Market Study for the Accelerated Growth for SMEs (AGS) program, supported by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Agova provided an SME Development Expert Consultant who:
- Conducted secondary market research and 25 stakeholder interviews.
- Identified Circular Economy opportunities for SMEs, focusing on segments that benefit women and youth.
- Delivered guidance on leveraging Zambia’s raw materials for recycling and remanufacturing, with a focus on waste management.
The study yielded 21 opportunities across three priority areas, with 10 top opportunities selected based on economic potential, SME interest, enabling ecosystems, environmental impact, and inclusivity.
Results
The study provided actionable insights and identified 10 high-potential Circular Economy opportunities for SMEs in Zambia, with strong prospects for empowering women and youth. These findings were presented at FinnBiz Week in February 2023, creating visibility and fostering collaboration between Zambian and Finnish businesses.
