Project: Barrick Lumwana Livelihood Restoration Plans
Client: Armitage Environmental & Social Consulting
Date: April 2024
The Problem
Barrick Lumwana’s mining expansion requires the resettlement of 279 households, creating the need to establish sustainable livelihood opportunities for the affected communities. This was essential to support long-term income generation and ensure the communities’ successful adaptation to their new locations as part of the mine’s Resettlement Action Plan (RAP).
The Solution
Agova, in collaboration with AESC, conducted a rapid market assessment to identify viable agricultural, agroforestry, and sustainable fuel alternatives for the resettled communities. The team carried out secondary research, stakeholder mapping, and consultations with local actors to assess market opportunities. Agova’s digital database and market research tools were used to map key agricultural markets, identify potential value chains, and explore alternative fuel sources and financial literacy programs to enhance economic resilience for the households.
Results
The assessment identified high-potential agricultural value chains such as soybeans, cassava, and beekeeping, which could provide sustainable income for the resettled communities. Agova recommended forming strategic partnerships with NGOs, private sector actors, and government programs to ensure continued market access. The findings are now being used to shape Livelihood Restoration Plans for these households, with intervention activities set to begin in the coming months.
